Key Value Storage – A Talk with Bill Martin of the SNIA Technical Council

SNIA has a new specification in town – focused on key value storage.  SNIA on Storage sat down with Bill Martin, Co-Chair of the SNIA Technical Council and Co-Chair of the SNIA Object Drive Technical Work Group, to understand why SNIA took on this project and what are the results.

SNIA On Storage (SOS):  Bill, thanks for taking the time to chat with us.   To get started, can you tell me what key value storage is and how it relates to the Technical Work charter that SNIA undertakes?

Bill Martin (BM):  Key value storage is a new method of storing data when compared to the traditional block storage method.  You store a “Value” related to a “key (address)”, with the ability to then look up the value in the future using the “key” of the associated object. Read More

What Drives SNIA Technical Work?

In 2019, SNIA On Storage is  partnering with the SNIA Technical Council Co-Chairs Bill Martin and Mark Carlson to chat about SNIA technical activities. In this blog, we chat with Mark on the catalysts for new SNIA work.  SNIA also invites you to check out our event calendar to meet SNIA in person across the globe in the next months.

SNIA On Storage (SOS):  A new year always brings new ideas, and I’m sure SNIA has some exciting activities planned for 2019.  But just how are new SNIA efforts created?

Mark Carlson (MC):  SNIA does not just sit back and dream up work to do, but rather relies on industry input and requirements.  A great example of how SNIA work is created is the 2018 launch of the Computational Storage Technical Work Group (TWG).  It all started at the Flash Memory Summit industry event with a simple Birds-of-a-Feather on a thing called “computational storage”.  Interest definitely was high – the room was packed – and the individuals assembled decided to use SNIA as the vehicle to do definition and standardization of this new concept. Extending the Reach of Storage Developer Education in 2019

With another successful year of SNIA Storage Developer Conferences (SDC) completed, SNIA on Storage spoke with Mark Carlson, SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair, on 2018 highlights and 2019 plans to educate and support this important technical community.

SNIA On Storage (SOS):  In 2018, SNIA volunteers provided key resources and time supporting our storage developer community, a central focus for the Technical Council.  What activities were the TC most pleased with in 2018?

Mark Carlson (MC):  For the past several years we have been pushing SDC to expand globally. Starting with SDC India and this year adding SDC EMEA, we are reaching developers around the world now with educational content. Each year we get better and better talk proposals and the hard part is not being able to present more content. I always encourage developers to submit talks on their latest discoveries and architectures. Other developers want to hear about it.

SOS:  There was a lot of good feedback on the content from SDC North America in 2018.  What was your overall impression of this 21st SDC event? Read More

Dive into NVMe at Storage Developer Conference – a Chat with SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair Bill Martin

The SNIA Storage Developer Conference (SDC) is coming up September 24-27, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara CA.  The agenda is now live!

SNIA on Storage is teaming up with the SNIA Technical Council to dive into major themes of the 2018 conference.  The SNIA Technical Council takes a leadership role to develop the content for each SDC, so SNIA on Storage spoke with Bill Martin, SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair and SSD I/O Standards at Samsung Electronics, to understand why SDC is bringing NVMe and NVMe-oF to conference attendees.

SNIA On Storage (SOS): What is NVMe and why is SNIA emphasizing it as one of their key areas of focus for SDC?

Bill Martin (BM):  NVMeTM, also known as NVM ExpressR, is an open collection of standards and information to fully expose the benefits of non-volatile memory (NVM) in all types of computing environments from mobile to data center.

SNIA is very supportive of NVMe.  In fact, earlier this year, SNIA, the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), and the NVM Express organizations formed a new alliance to coordinate standards for managing solid state drive (SSD) storage devices. This alliance brings together multiple standards for managing the issue of scale-out management of SSDs.  It’s designed to enable an all-inclusive management experience by improving the interoperable management of information technologies.

With interest both from within and outside of SNIA from architects, developers, and implementers on how these standards work, the SNIA Technical Council decided to bring even more sessions on this important area to the SDC audience this year. We are proud to include 16 sessions on NVMe topics over the four days of the conference.

Dive into Orchestration at SDC – a Chat with Mark Carlson, SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair

The SNIA Technical Council takes a leadership role to develop the content for each SDC, so SNIA on Storage spoke with Mark Carlson, SNIA Technical Council Co-Chair and Principal Engineer, Industry Standards, Toshiba Memory America, to understand why SDC is bringing Orchestration to conference attendees.

SNIA On Storage (SOS):  When I think of “orchestration”, my first vision is of a conductor with a magnificent symphony.  Am I on the right track in thinking this way?

Mark Carlson (MC):  If you think of the conductor as the “automator” of the symphony, you’re right on!  Orchestration for computing is the automated arrangement, coordination, and management of computer systems, middleware, and services.  For example, cloud orchestration technology helps to manage the interconnections and interactions among public and private cloud infrastructure workloads.
